Chapter Seven

The silence in the room seemed to go on forever. George sat staring at Amy, a look of such utter disbelief on his face she felt like a criminal confessing a murder.

After a long, long pause, during which she wished she’d kept her big mouth shut, George said in a strangled voice, “Er…are you quite sure that’s what you want to do?”

She wavered, then reminded herself what was at stake. “I’m sure,” she said firmly.

“But this isn’t a sack of groceries you’re talking about here. This is a human life. Your son or your daughter. This is something you could regret for the rest of your life.”

Tears unexpectedly filled her eyes again and she brushed them away. “Don’t you think I know that? Don’t you think I’ve spent endless hours at night thinking about it, worrying about it, agonizing over the best thing to do?”

George leaned forward, his hands tucked between his knees. “You still have time. You don’t need to make a decision right now. Once the baby starts growing and you can feel it inside you, you could change your mind.”

She shook her head, barely holding on to her composure. “I can’t keep it, George.”

“Why can’t you keep it?”

She lifted her hands helplessly, then let them drop again. “I’ve gone over and over this in my mind. It wouldn’t be fair to the baby. A child needs two parents in its life.”

“Lots of kids grow up with only one of their parents after they got a divorce.”

“For the most part they’ve still got two parents, even though they are apart.” She met his gaze, silently pleading with him to understand. “You had your dad until you were grown-up. David was only eighteen when Mr. Bentley died. Isn’t that why David was so reckless and irresponsible? Because he missed having a father?”

George shrugged. “Maybe. But some day you’re going to get married, and your baby will have a father.”

“There’s no guarantee of that. Meanwhile I’d have to work to support myself and a baby. I wouldn’t have the time or the money to give the baby everything it needs. What kind of life would it have, being shuffled from place to place while I worked long hours to give it a home? Believe me, it would be better off in a happy, secure home with two parents to take care of it.”

“All any baby needs is love.”

She scowled at him. “If you believe that, you really don’t know anything about babies.”

“You’re right, that was a dumb thing to say. But I do know that this is probably going to be the most important decision of your life. I think you should take more time to think about it. To be really sure about what you want to do.”

“I am sure.” She pushed herself up from the chair, disturbing the cat’s sleep. “I don’t want to think about it any more. I’ve made up my mind and nothing’s going to change it. Once I start feeling the baby move it will be much harder to make that kind of decision.
